Top 20 Novel First Lines
Years ago I read Little Black Book by Tabatha Vargo and Melissa Andrea.
The first line of this book is "Wilma and Betty fuck like porn stars."
Yep, it is.
And because of that epic first line, I began taking notice of first lines when I read.
It's one of those things I just do and don't even realize it.
When I started writing a book years ago, someone gave me the advice to open my favorite books and read the first lines and make notes.
Does the single first line pull me in?
Do I need to read the whole paragraph to grab me?
Do I need to read the whole first chapter to be captivated?
She finished up by telling me there was no right or wrong way to write an opening (and I agree) but this reinforced my love of epic first lines. This goes along with my love of covers which you guys already know about.
Today I thought I'd share with you 20-ish of my favorite first lines.
Some are crazy.
Some are extremely powerful.
Some are heartbreaking.
All of them are memorable.
Do you love first lines?
Or first paragraphs?
Or first Chapters?
What is your favorite part of a book?
We'd love you to share with us.
Here are some of our favorite first lines...
